In between games

I have spent some time lately to startup Legends of Valour but haven´t enough material to post anything yet. My saved charactes disapperad suddenly and I had to re-roll them and I have had very little time to give this game a chance lately.

Meanwhile, my poll about the readers average age of this blog is now ended. Not surprisingly, 80 % of the readers are at least 30 years old and almost 40 % are of the age 40 or older. Though this poll of only 21 respondents is not statistically correct it nevertheless shows what was expected. Most people playing CRPGS between 1985 to the beginning of the 1990s was at an age around 10 to 30 years old which this poll reflects pretty well. In my view the CRPG period ends somewhere in the middle of the 1990:s when the PC platform took over the game market completely and most games begun to switch to fully 3D.

Lastly, it is with sorrow I read that CRPGAddict has now decided to end his ambitious mission. He did inspire me to startup this blog. I do however fully support his choice. Real life must always be a firsthand priority. This is only a hobby after all. That being said, I hope he will return later on with his excellent posts from the CRPG era.

  1. I second that about CRPG Addict. I think this is the first time in my life that I've hoped someone would fall back ON the wagon. Responsibly, though. ;)

  2. Damned shamed about the CRPG Addict, but if his playing really is an unwholesome addiction then it is a good thing he quit.

So what do people vote in the best series poll?
Personally I voted for the Gold Box games, but I also have a soft spot for the Might&Magic games. M&M was a bigger and longer lasting series and it spawned some excellent spin-offs in Heroes and Dark Messiah, but the GB games did combat (which to me is the heart of party based CRPGs) better than any of the old CRPG classics. It also spawned the Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures which allows you to make your own adventures and which still has an active community 18 years later.

  3. Personally, I have never played any Ultima game but I tried to play part 7 and 8 this year but I had trouble getting accustomed to the isometric perspective and I never felt immersed into the game.

Bard´s Tales greatest asset is that it got me introduced to the genre and was very good at the time the first installment was released. Too bad it did not evolve well from that point onward.

I only got into Wizardy in the last installment (Wizardry 8) and also played Wizards & Warriors both of which was good games but still not belonging to the best.

I have played almost all of the Might and Magic series and they are very good indeed, but best of all is the SSI Goldbox games. I started with Champions of Krynn to the Amiga and that was the best RPG I´ve ever played back then. All the Goldbox titles are good and with good story and interesting NPC:s. So I agree in what you say PetrusOctavianus.

  4. I voted for Gold Box games as well. I think it'll depend on the games one played during their youth, and this is what I played. Maybe if someone had played the Ultima games, they'd choose that.

I'm still hopeful that once CRPG Addict's life settles down he'll come back to the blog. Even if he only posts once or twice a month, it'd be great to seem him back at it. I don't think he should worry about completing all games, and only get as far as he can at a pace more reasonable.

  5. It looks like the Ultima Dragons have rallied for the poll...

  6. Yepp, Ultima spanned at least two decades of games and the Goldbox series just half a decade or so. Nevertheless I would have thought more votes for Might and Magic.

  10. Yes, I know I´ve been abscent for far too long. Private reasons have diminished my gaming time a lot lately. I have not given up in any way however, just on the contrary. Meantime, enjoy CRPGAddicts return.
